The writer and producer of several well-known Hollywood titles will direct an independent movie that will be filmed in the Bozeman and Livingston areas this fall, Gov. BrianS chweitzer's office has announced.

Jim Kouf, whose movie credits include “Stakeout” and “Rush Hour,” has chosen Montana as the location for his independent movie “A Fork in the Road.”

The film will be about an escaped convict and a young woman beset with relationship roubles who try to run from their problems and, despite their good intentions, wind up bouncing from one mishap to the next, according to a Montana Department of Commerce press release.

The duo will meet several nasty characters along the way, but always manage to elude disaster.

"It's exciting to see a story that's both set in Big Sky Country and filmed in Big Sky Country," Schweitzer said in the news release. "Montana provides unparalleled beauty and versatility for filmmakers. We have top-notch landscapes, film crews and tax incentives, and our assets are attracting business."

The Bozeman area has hosted a handful of film productions over the past two years.

The independent family film “A Plumm Summer” was filmed in several locations throughout the area last summer, including the Story Mansion.

This summer, several scenes for the Kevin Bacon film “Taking Chance” are being filmed in Bozeman and Madison County [Ennis].

Schweitzer attributed the recent upswing in movie productions to passage of the Big Screen on the Big Sky Act, which provided tax breaks to film productions that film in the state and hire Montana residents. State lawmakers passed the act in 2005 and expanded its incentives earlier this year.

Production companies are given a 14 percent incentive rebate on all Montana labor hired for film production and a 9 percent rebate on all production-related Montana expenditures, including lodging, equipment rental, fuel, lumber and construction materials, according to the Department of Commerce.

No cast members have been announced yet for “A Fork in the Road.” Kouf will direct the film, which he co-wrote with Alan DiFiore.

Some of Kouf's other credits include “National Treasure” and “Snow Dogs.”

The film will start production in the Laurel, Livingston and Bozeman areas this fall.
